Kiran Ahluwalia’s seductive voice draws on her Indian-Punjabi heritage for this free opening to the White Light Festival. Her original compositions and arrangements embody the spiritual essence of ghazal, an ancient form of poetry, influenced by Sufi mysticism, about illicit, unattainable love. Accompanied by traditional Indian percussion and contemporary Western instruments, Ahluwalia’s boundary-blurring songs invite us to explore the human condition, transcending the self by losing ourselves in love.
“A powerful woman who has a depth of character in her wonderfully pliable, expressive voice.”
