Program Notes

In Malian villages deep in the forests watered by the Niger River, hunting has always meant more than food; it is the center of cultural and religious life, and hunters are seen as healers, as seers, as ties to an unimaginably ancient past. Along with his band, Bassekou Kouyate is a new voice from this tradition, an intensely energetic performer whose fiery virtuosity with the rhythmic Malian lute called the “ngoni” has brought him international renown, including collaborations with Ali Farka Touré, Carlos Santana, and Béla Fleck.

This Target Free Thursday performance is generously underwritten by Target.

Please note that seating is limited and admission is on a first-come, first-served basis.
